Camel Tagine

Camel Tagine

When you’re in the middle of the Sahara Desert, your options are pretty limited when it comes to food. Basic vegetables and meat is pretty much all you’ll find. It’s 50°C during the day, so hot food is hardly what you’re craving. But immersing into local customs is the only way to appreciate other cultures.

We were at our Auberge amongst the sand dunes and were looking through the lunch options. A camel tagine was on the list, and because I make a point of trying local food wherever I go, it was the only option from my perspective.

Honestly, it was actually pretty delicious. Camel meat isn’t the softest – and definitely has a strong flavour – but it was rather delicious. With a cooked egg on top, it really hit the spot! Well worth a taste if you’ve made the trek to the middle of the desert.
