Ice Hotel

Located just outside of Kiruna in Sweden’s far north, the Ice Hotel is an incredible yearly project that attracts thousands of tourists every winter season. They pull all the ice out of the frozen Torne River, and when the hotel melts in summer, all the water flows back to it’s place of origin. This makes it not just one of the most impressive construction project in the world, but also one of the most environmentally-friendly.

I didn’t end up staying in the cold rooms because they were completely booked out for the dates I was there, but I still got to walk around the entire hotel. I saw all the art suites, each of which is designed by a different artist every ear. I made a compulsory stop at the Absolut Ice Bar, which was beautifully designed and had a delicious drinks menu (all made with Absolut, of course). It turned out to be a fantastic way of keeping warm in the sub-zero temperatures.

Every year hundreds of artists are invited to help design and physically create the design of the Ice Hotel and each of its infamous suites. Everything from the foyer, to the entrance hall, to the Ice Bar – it’s all redesigned every year by a new group of artists. And as you can see below, the art suites and the decorations all around the hotel are as creative as they are intricate. Unfortunately, the pictures just don’t do it justice.
